13.8V 70A SMPS

On EBAY I found a 12V 82 Amp (Yeah – maybe) switchmode power supply for LED strips, so I bought one, and replaced the capacitors on the secondary side with some low ESR types, and decided to dial the voltage up to 13.8V instead of the original 12V, so the current rating is then de-rated from 82 Amps to 70 Amps to maintain the 1kW rating of the SMPS.

I then set about putting the SMPS into an instrument box that I got from Jaycar electronics, and installed a mains filter on the 240V line input, and also installed a voltage / current / energy meter that I got from BangGood.com.

I have to say that I am happy with how it turned out and it is a welcome addition to the bench.

Ammeter shunt with 3d printed mountings – 100A 75mV.

Low ESR capacitors for the secondary to improve the longevity of the unit and reduce output ripple.
